Tile Warehouse’s 8 Tile Trends For 2022 In Australia.

Knowing what tiles are on-trend will help you smash your next tiling project in 2022!

For this blog, we caught up with Leigh Nihill from Tile Warehouse, a Newcastle-based Tile retailer, to get his opinion on all the hot tile trends to watch in 2022.

Tile Warehouse is Newcastle’s leading stockist of specialty tiles and has the most extensive range of tiles on display at their showroom at Warners Bay.

According to Leigh, one of the best ways to take your Granny Flat project to the next level is knowing what tiles are on-trend. The type of tiles you choose for your bathroom, kitchen splashback and floor and wall tiles can affect the whole look and feel of the space and define what other finishes work within your new Granny Flat.

Here are Leigh’s top 8 tile trends for 2022 in Australia!

1. Warm Greys (Greige) & Sands

Leigh says the popularity of warm neutral colours like Greige and Sands has been strong so far in 2022 and will likely extend into 2023. Soft earthy tile colours in natural stone look, more bush stone style than marble.

Think ivory, off-white, cream, sand, pearl, bone and beige. Neutral colours are widely used in these shades to decorate every room in the home.

2. Japanese Glazed Pottery Style Tiles

Traditional Japanese glazed tiles are selling like hot cakes, Leigh says.

“Japanese tiles are often made with the philosophy of Wabi-sabi (beauty in imperfection); no two pieces are quite the same, giving a gorgeously textured look. Japanese glazed tiles are often used for splashbacks and feature walls.”

3. Mid-Century Modern

If you love the look and feel of the 1930s through to 1960s, Leigh said Mid-Century Modern tiles would be a great focal point.

Muted pastels (pinks, blues) in handmade look square tiles are trendy for splashbacks in Mid Century Modern designs. The muted pastels work great with the natural timber of your shelving to great effect.

4. Terrazzo

Terrazzo is still very popular, and coloured terrazzo tiles are where the trend is at! Particularly Terrazzo tiles with warm flecks of sand and burnt orange that add that warmth and openness to your project Leigh says.

5. Brass Trims, Drains And Tapware

The use of Brass is no new trend; however, its versatility and aesthetic have seen it go from strength to strength.

Other variations to Brass like Brushed Nickle, Gunmetal and aged finished tapware like Bronze or Tumbled Brass are also popular and can carry over to the kitchen tap.

6. Mixed Shape & Size Feature Walls

Mixed tile sizes, shapes, and irregular surfaces are being used in subway tile splashback walls to evoke a sense of handmade authenticity. The varying sizes can be all used together for unique pattern-making.

Leigh is also selling a lot of irregularly shaped floor tiles like the Grey Rockport Spanish Floor Tile, for example, as seen in the image below.

7. Unusual Coloured Marbles

Marble comes in all kinds of colours and textures. Compacted rocks inside the earth naturally form marble, resulting in unusual colours and textures, and it’s some of the more obscure variations trending right now!

Examples Viola Calacatta (White marble with burgundy and gold vein), Peacock Green (highly varied green), Rojo Alicante (orange/red marble), River Jade (White, green, black marble)

Calacatta Viola feature marble, with strong veins of burgundy and hints of gold it is a standout!  Complemented here with subways to bring out the colour, and brass trim and drains to reflect the gold.

River Jade gives a dramatic and masculine mood. Dark bathrooms are a bold choice that feels luxurious.

8. Gold Veined Calacatta Marble

Tile Warehouse has sold a lot of Gold Veined Calacatta Marble tiles instead of the Carrara/Grey vein that has been popular for the last few years and doesn’t look to be slowing down anytime soon.

The Calacutta’s Oro’s exquisite and varied pattern mimics that of a natural stone. The organic pattern and natural colours ripple through the design creating a contemporary and sophisticated finish.  Calcutta Oro comes in both a matt and polished finish.

There you have it, the tile hot list of 2022!
